If you are seeking federal, state or private college financial aid to help pay for school, your must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (or FAFSA) form. The CSS Profile is required by many private colleges and universities to determine your eligibility for non-government financial aid, such as the institution’s own grants, loans, and scholarships.

The appeals process is not often publicized at financial aid offices. Like many bureaucracies, they prefer you not push back. But remember, that university’s decision regarding your award letter is only “final” when you stop trying.
